What is Body Mass Index (BMI) ?

BMI is a calculation that doctors use to calculate body fat % in a person, using their height and weight. This calculation helps figure out if a person is underweight, healthy, overweight or obese.

  • If BMI is under 5%, your child is considered underweight
  • If BMI is equal to or greater than 5% and less than 85%, your child is considered healthy
  • If BMI is equal to or greater than 85% and less than 95%, your child is considered overweight
  • If BMI is greater than 95%, then your child is considered obese

Ways to keep your child happy and healthy :-

  • Wash hands-
Please keep in mind to always tell your child to wash hands frequently but also minimally, as the pandemic is slowly going away but not yet fully gone!
  • A healthy breakfast-
Doctors cannot stress on this enough when they say that breakfast is the most important meal of the day.
  • Give them fruits as snacks-
An apple a day, keeps the doctor away!
  • Make healthy food tasty-
Kids do not care if their food is healthy or not, if it’s tasty they are devouring it! Making them healthy and yummy recipes would make sure they eat good, home cooked food. Remember, If cooked the right way, then vegetables can be tasty too.
  • Reward your kids-
Rewarding kids for their good behaviour is a great way to keep them happy. They think of their parents as role models, and when they do good and realise that they have done something their parents have liked, children would want to do it more often.
  • Drink water-
Staying hydrated is very important. 4 to 8 year old children are supposed to be drinking at least 6 glasses of water while older children should have at least 7 to 8 glasses of water.
  • Get adequate sleep-
Sleep is one of the most important needs. A good night’s sleep is the key to having a happy day. Sufficient sleep is very much needed to stay healthy. Children need at least 10-11 hours of sleep. Staying away from electronic devices an hour or so before sleeping is very helpful to get sleep.
  • Make sure they stay physically active-
Get your kid outside. Get some fresh air, some sunshine and less screen time. Encouraging them to join a sports class or something that would involve exercising can prevent multiple infections and help them stay healthy, also using less phones.
  • Dental Hygiene-
Make sure your child brushes twice a day. Flossing is a must. Dental hygiene may be boring for children, but it is very important.
  • Fulfil their needs and wants-
If you restrict junk food and screen time completely, it would make your kids upset and affect your relationship with them making them not want to listen to you. A little bit of junk food from a hygienic place and a little bit of screen time can do no harm.

Remember, family time is extremely essential. Without it, anything you do is of no use. Spend some time together during meals, keep some time free for playtime before health. This helps in keeping your children happy and healthy, or even adults for that matter.
